Our Brief History

The National Association of Black Military Women (NABMW) is an association of women located throughout the country who are veterans or current members of the United States Armed Forces. It was founded under the former name of "The Black WAAC, WAC, Women in Service" in Hampton, Virginia in 1976 by a group of women who served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and Women's Army Corps (WAC), during World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars. At this chartered meeting, the group decided to locate and invite other former service women to a first reunion that was held in 1978 in Dallas, Texas.

Ever since, Biennial Reunions continued and have been held in Los Angeles, California (1980), Detroit, Michigan (1982), Atlanta, Georgia (1984), Washington, D.C. (1986), New York City, New York (1988), Fort McClellan, Alabama (1990), Orlando, Florida (1992), San Antonio, Texas (1994), San Francisco, California (1996), Atlanta, Georgia (1998), Chicago, Illinois (2000), and Norfolk, Virginia (2002), Ft Des Moines, Iowa (2004), and Kansas City, Missouri (2006). Our 2008 reunion is scheduled to be in Las Vegas, Nevada. (SOURCE: NABMW)
