The National Association Of Black Military Women was founded by a group of 21 women in 1976 in Hampton Virginia. These women decided to have a reunion every two years and invite other black military women. It was then called the BLacks WAACs/WACs and was mainly Army veterans. As years went by many women from other services began coming to the reunions and in 1994 the group decided to have the organization charted. In 1997 the organization was chartered in the state of Maryland and was officially named "The National Association of Black Military Women (formerly The Black WAAC/WAC/Women in Service).
